We all know from our own experience what consciousness is but it’s very difficult to define. Furthermore, this is too narrow a definition because it says nothing about what happens to us all every minute of our lives. Some say consciousness is that state that we all feel when we are awake as opposed to when we are sleeping but this won’t do because dreaming is a state of consciousness. It’s a different matter when it comes to consciousness because it’s very difficult to find an objective definition that captures the essence of consciousness. So, for example, if an AI chess program can beat most humans, then it’s reasonable to attribute intelligence to that AI program– since good chess playing is conceived as requiring intelligence if played by a human. In simple terms, intelligence is the ability to solve problems. There is a difference between intelligence and consciousness. Human-level intelligence has come to be known as Strong AI or Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). In this article, I explain the role of machine consciousness, for improving AI systems. This is more of a problem of consciousness rather than intelligence. In other words, they are currently incapable of attributing meaning, in a human sense, to what they are doing. Some prominent AI researchers say that understanding is necessary because even if an AI program can solve a problem as competently as a human they may not have a broader context to judge the value of their solution. For whilst AI algorithms may be more powerful than humans, they understand very little about what they are doing. However, there is general agreement that this technology is not, on its own, going to be enough to deliver human-level intelligence. In the last decade, deep learning algorithms have enabled AI systems to perform pattern recognition tasks, like speech and image recognition, as well as or better than humans. The current generation of AI has transformed the world we live in.

Since its introduction, the RIC has often been used as a signifier of recyclability, but the presence of a code on a plastic product does not necessarily indicate that it is recyclable any more than its absence means the plastic object is necessarily unrecyclable. In 2013 this standard was revised to change the graphic marking symbol of the RIC from the "chasing arrows" of the Recycling Symbol to a solid triangle instead. In 2008, ASTM International took over the administration of the RIC system and eventually issued ASTM D7611-Standard Practice for Coding Plastic Manufactured Articles for Resin Identification. Subsequent revisions to the RIC have replaced the arrows with a solid triangle, in order to address consumer confusion about the meaning of the RIC, and the fact that the presence of a RIC symbol on an item does not necessarily indicate that it is recyclable. When a number is omitted, the arrows arranged in a triangle resemble the universal recycling symbol, a generic indicator of recyclability. The numbers also indicate general ease (and thus, cost-effectiveness) of recycling, with 1 being the easiest and 6 and 7 being very difficult. 7:(OTHER)/(PLA) other plastics, such as acrylic, nylon, polycarbonate and polylactic acid.6: polystyrene (PS) (plastic utensils, Styrofoam, cafeteria trays, etc.).5: polypropylene (PP) (auto parts, industrial fibres, food containers, etc.).

What about the density of salt water? Because of the dissolved sediments and minerals, sea water is slightly denser than pure water. And because ice’s density is lower than that of water, ice floats in water. This means that the density of ice (0.92 g/mL) is less than that of liquid water (1.0 g/mL). But the amount of matter hasn’t changed – it is just spread out over a larger space. While most other substances contract, water expands as it becomes a solid.īecause water expands as it freezes, ice takes up more space (has a greater volume) than the liquid water does. You’ve observed this if you’ve ever noticed the bump on an ice cube or had a can of soda explode in the freezer. When water freezes, the water molecules spread out to align in a definite crystalline structure. Pure liquid water’s density is 1.0 g/mL, and a standard by which to compare other substances. For example, pure gold always has a density of 19.3 g/mL (grams per milliliter). Density is a defining property of a substance, and it is constant no matter how much of the substance there is. Substances with a high density have tightly packed atoms, while the atoms in a low-density substance are more spread out. Density essentially describes how tightly packed a substance’s atoms are. Density is calculated by dividing an object’s mass (amount of matter) by its volume (the space it occupies), or D=M/V. To understand why ice floats, it is necessary to understand the concept of density. That’s an amazing statistic to consider given the massive size of some icebergs, but the very fact that ice floats is pretty remarkable. You have probably heard the statistic that approximately 90 percent of an iceberg is found under water. Wind and water erode icebergs into amazing sculptural shapes. Tabular icebergs have steep sides and a flat top like a plateau, while non-tabular icebergs include irregular shapes such as rounded tops, spires, sloping sides, and blocks. Icebergs are also classified by their shape. Photo courtesy of Josh Landis, National Science Foundation. The northern edge of the giant iceberg B-15A, located close to Ross Island, Antarctica. The storm created ocean swells that traveled over 8,000 miles and caused B-15 to crash repeatedly against the coast. Why did this massive berg break apart? Seismic recordings showed that an Arctic storm six days prior to the event was to blame. B-15 subsequently broke into smaller pieces, named B-15A, B-15B, and so on. Iceberg B-15, which calved from the Ross Ice Shelf of Antarctica in 2000, was half a mile thick and covered an area of about 4,500 square miles (about the size of Connecticut). Since the bulk of an iceberg is below the water, the entire berg was estimated to be as tall as a 55-story building! The tallest known iceberg in the North Atlantic was 550 feet (168 m) above sea level. Small bergs (a little smaller than a car) are known as “growlers,” while slightly larger bergs (about the size of a house) are called”bergy bits.” Larger bergs are classified as small, medium, large, and very large. Icebergs float in salt water because they are formed by calving, or splitting, glaciers and are thus made of fresh water. Icebergs are found in the Arctic, North Atlantic, and Southern Oceans. That gives the recruiter relevant information about your skills.įor example, you say you have killer fundraising skills. They want to know how and where you learned those skills. By this, we mean that recruiters don’t only care about your skills. The other reason recruiters dislike functional resumes is that they are hard to read. But, in general, a recruiters’ first thought is that you’re hiding something, and that makes them nervous. That could be a spotty work history or inconsistent career growth. The thought is that job seekers use a functional resume to hide things. First, like it or not, when a recruiter sees a functional resume, it could raise a red flag. Recruiters dislike functional resumes for two reasons. However, knowing what the cons are first will help put the pros into context. This is not meant to talk you out of using one. Not to be a downer, but it’s important to cover the disadvantages of functional resumes before covering the advantages. However, there may be a few select times when a functional resume is the right choice in your job search. You may find that the disadvantages of a functional resume may ultimately outweigh the benefits of using one. And there are several reasons why most recruiters and job coaches will tell you to avoid using a functional resume. While a functional resume has its place in job hunting, it’s the least commonly used resume format. None of these skills are tied to a specific job or experience, and instead, stand on their own. Instead of listing your jobs, you group your skills by type of experience and list out the specific things you can do in each of these areas. However, on a functional resume, the meat is your skills and achievements. Under each job are a list of your job duties, skills, and accomplishments. In a chronological resume, the “meat” of your resume is the list of all the jobs you’ve held in reverse chronological order. It just means you draw the recruiter’s attention to your skills and abilities. That doesn’t mean you leave your work history off your resume. What is a Functional Resume?Ī functional resume, sometimes called a skills-based resume, puts the focus on your skills and not your job history. A functional resume isn’t always your best bet and may, in fact, make it harder for you to land an interview. And, while this may be the case, it’s not the whole story. You may have heard that a functional resume is better for certain job seekers in certain situations. It can be even harder when you’re trying to switch careers or have periods of unemployment. Trying to remember the name of this job or that title, what you did when and where, and making it all sound compelling can be difficult. Writing a resume isn’t everybody’s idea of a good time. His own journey culminates in a record bending, 28-hour, climb up to the snowy peak of Mt. My podcast guest on todays show, award winning investigative journalist Scott Carney, dives into the fundamental philosophy at the root of this movement in three interlocking narratives. Perhaps no one exemplifies this better than Dutch fitness guru Wim Hof, whose remarkable ability to control his body temperature in extreme cold has sparked a whirlwind of scientific study.īecause of him, scientists in the United States and Europe are just beginning to understand how cold adaptation might help combat autoimmune diseases and chronic pains and, in some cases, even reverse diabetes. These extreme athletes train in CrossFit boxes, compete in Tough Mudders and challenge themselves in Spartan races. Every year, millions of people forgo traditional gyms and push the limits of human endurance by doing boot camp style workouts in raw conditions. The feeling that something is missing from our daily routines is growing and has spawned a movement. When we slightly reimagine how how our body fits into the world and then we can conditioning ourselves to find resilience in unfamiliar environments. The new book What Doesn’t Kill Us: How Freezing Water, Extreme Altitude and Environmental Conditioning Will Renew Our Lost Evolutionary Strength uncovers how just about anyone can reclaim a measure of our species' evolutionary strength by tapping into the things that feel uncomfortable. Most of us don't even realize that natural variation - sweating and shivering - is actually good for us. And many of us are chronically overweight. The technologies that we use to make us comfortable are so all encompassing that they sever the biological link to a changing environment. Today we live in the thrall of constant climate control and exercise only when our office schedules permit. They evaded predators and built civilizations with just their raw brainpower and inner grit.īut things have changed and now comfort is king. But other Federal leaders have adopted a ‘wait and see’ approach, refusing to be drawn on the controversy.” “In the Federation, Fleet Admiral Tayo Maikori has revived his investigation into Salvation and is hoping to authenticate the INRA logs. As he bluntly told the Senate: ‘Nothing in the Imperial armoury comes close to matching the anti-xeno superweapon’s devastating capabilities.’” “The Empire is taking a pragmatic view, with Senator Denton Patreus focusing on the strategic objective of defeating the Thargoids. Others believe Aegis’s claims to be false, a desperate attempt to save themselves. Some are enraged that Salvation may have history with INRA or be responsible for the loss of the Alexandria. “Salvation has always been a contentious figure, and the logs found in the DG Canum Venaticorum system have polarised public opinion further. Vox Galactica published a report from political correspondent Conrad Sterling: The Alliance, Empire and Federation have responded coolly to accusations that Salvation has hidden links to Azimuth Biochemicals and INRA. Other rewards are available for contributors outside this number. Sol’s Salutis Aeternum is instead offering a stock Alliance Chieftain to a limited number of Preuss Terminal campaign contributors. The majority of contributors to the Kumiho Sky campaign will receive a pre-engineered high capacity AX fixed missile launcher, among other rewards, courtesy of Sirius Corporation. In advance of the vote, both pro-pact and anti-Sirius councillors are attempting to sway colleagues to their cause by securing a sizeable resource package for the Alliance Defence Force. The Assembly is evenly split over formalising military ties with Sirius Corporation to enhance defensive options against the Thargoids, with a decision expected at the end of June. Shortly before the Golconda made its first jump into hyperspace, Vox Galactica published a statement from Commander Javi Alvarado: The Forester’s Choice outpost remains operational and will continue to export Apa Vietti, a unique alcoholic spirit. The Federation has made assurances that the Golconda is under its protection, and is equipped with comms systems to summon aid if needed.
